Friendly Typefaces pt.2

As I am righting this now, I've forgotten something, which is strongly related to what I'll be typing ahead.

I had used the font on my concept (which is explained in this post) but when I showed it for critique (this is where my forgetfulness starts) I either had showed my tutor or maybe it was during a tutorial, the feed back on the font wasn't that positive and a suggestion of using a serif font was brought up.

Serifs to me tend to be a bit weaker in readablity and tend to be used for a 'serious' tone.

Taking 'serifs' as advice, I went in search of some serif based fonts but they still had to fit the set criteria of being a friendly typeface.

There were two that I found, out of 6, that happen to fit were:

Ribeye

Spatha

I chose to use Ribeye in the end after I tested it with the design of my concept, which will be shown in another post. Why? well it fitted with the design of my concept but also because I found to be a bit more legible over Spatha and was a bit more playful.

Friendly Typefaces

'Vittles' !

A sub-brand off 'Sustenance' and you couldn't really make 'V' a tick!!!! ARRRGGGGHHH!

It was a challenge!

The target audience is a young one so the readability must be legible and simple and fun!
e.g.

So I went in search of friendly type faces and found :
I googled 'friendly typefaces/typography'. I even did a google image search. I managed to come across one site that led to this link : http://sudtipos.com/home
but I cannot recall the link and I believe I came across it during a google image search.

This link's site consisted of typefaces that appeared to be curvacious & playful with perhaps 70% of all the typefaces there having soft or rounded edges. One caught my eye and it was called 'cupcake', which somewhat depicted what I wanted to use for the 'Vittles'. The typeface has soft/rounded edges, is strongly readable and was somewhat playful.

*Oh yes, I was suppose to mentions this at the beginnning but in my design, I wanted to incorporate san-serif based fonts for readability.

Since I liked the typeface, I went insearch of a site where I could download it but instead came across this site and its version of 'cupcake' which definately fit in with my concept idea. It's playful, fun and worked well as a font for children.

Though it fitted my idea, I couldn't find a link nor a download to it. Neither to the one from Sudtipos (sudtipos.com). The best I could really do was search replacement fonts that had a similar resemblence or fitted the criteria of having soft/rounded edges and was fun. I used fonts from Dafont and Google Font.

The two best out of 10 I had found as a replacement were:

Moodboard for Vittles

Its been a litle while since my last update and I've been preoccupied with Japanese since I've been ditching it for the sake of this unit!

This here is the moodboard for vittles. The typography.... I will further explain it in another post. As for the other elements, I've collected things that relate to 'eco' and 'friendly' with creativity. My favourite part would have to be the graphic in the middle, which represents 'texture and colour'. The image is made from a 'collage' of paper and fabric.

Below is a 'screencap' of the basic outline of the moodboard that Walter Asscociations created. The original lecture file on moodle...well I couldn't find it. I checked wk6 but the file there was a reuploaded file from wk4 lecture.

Reworked concept

These are the reworked concepts from my submitted logo concept for 'Sustenance'. The previous font face I used was called 'High tower' but was commented as being too soft and not proffessional or corporate enough so these concepts have been created with the use and Serif based fonts.

So far 'MPH 2B' is working.

More Concepts

These three concepts are the finished result from my previous post, with the starfruit idea, outlined in illustrator and coloured. I also tested the logo out with some fonts and Voces stood out to me.
The logo is somewhat made to look like the starfruit shape (to promote the idea of using a fruit) and also in a way that makes in look like a shooting star.

The next day, I printed out and went to show my tutor.
Though, it got shot down! ;A;
Why?
  • How did it represent Australia and the company? The star is used on the flag, right and the star is a palyful and positive shape.
  • The shape had sharp edges which couldn't really promote the friendliness of the company.
  • The colours used were a bit dangerous. Black and yellow.
P.s. The company and speak of is 'Sustenance'.

Though, the tutor did help me, especially since time was running out. He gave me a suggestion to work on and that was to incorporate the southern cross (from the Australian Flag).

These two concepts show the reworking of my concept. I tried other different ways but....
